RAPID CITY, SD – The Independence Day Celebration at Main Street Square will honor past and present military personnel with musical performances and more on Friday, July 4, from 2 to 8 p.m. sponsored by Family Thrift Center and Prairie Market.
Patriotic music will be presented by Air Force Academy Band, with ensembles performing at 2, 2:30, 4 and 5 p.m. The full concert band will be on stage at 6:30 p.m., introduced by Col. Kevin Kennedy of Ellsworth Air Force Base. The Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard will post the colors at 6:30 p.m. A POW/MIA ceremony will take place during the final concert.
A Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest with cash prizes is set for 3 p.m.
“Join us for an afternoon of music and activities,” said Megan Whitman, executive director of Main Street Square. “There’s nothing better than a patriotic concert and honoring those who have served while celebrating our country’s independence.”
The Rapid City Rush Foundation Kidz Zone is available in Pedestrian Alley, featuring inflatables, Black Hills Mini Express, chalk art, bean bag toss and balloon twisting. The Mount Rushmore Mascots will also be on site.
Immediately following the final performance of the Air Force Academy Band, a video of fireworks discharged at Mt. Rushmore will play on the big screen.
The Bud Light Beverage Garden will be open, and food and beverages will be available from vendors at Main Street Square and at Downtown restaurants.
