Destination Rapid City and the Rapid City Police Department will host the 2013 Cruiser Car Show & Street Fair on Sunday, July 14. Formerly known as Cruiser Night, this year's free event will take place downtown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in its third year of a new event format.
Classic cars will roll into the downtown area with parts of Main, Sixth and Seventh streets traffic-free as cruisers park and stay to show off the cars. In addition, attendees can enjoy a family-friendly street fair with vendors, live music and other entertainment.
Elvis will be in attendance for a meet and greet, and headlining band, The Potter Family, will be on the Main Street Square stage from 1 to 2 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. The Rapid City Police Department K9 unit will present a demonstration at noon. Local businesses and Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender will present awards to their top car picks onstage at 2 p.m., with Mike Modrick as emcee.
"The entire family will enjoy the event, looking at the unique cars and props," said Beth Hottel, assistant director of Destination Rapid City. "The entertainment at Main Street Square provides an opportunity to sit and rest before looking at even more cool cars."
Kids' activities, food vendors, beverage garden and vendors with auto-related items and services will round out the event. An unchaperoned cruise will take place after 4 p.m.
There is no charge to participate but those who plan to bring a car are asked to register on the Rapid City Police Department website at http://www.rcgov.org/Police/form-cruiser-car-show-registration.html. The online registration deadline is July 1. Car show participants are limited to the first 450 vehicles. If there is room, participants may register the day of the event at the corner of Main and Fifth streets.
Participants in the car show are asked to enter the event area on the corner of Main and Fifth streets. Parking attendants will guide drivers to their parking spaces within the closure area.
Car show spectators are encouraged to park in the city parking ramp, which can be accessed from both Fifth and Sixth Streets (those using Sixth street must approach the ramp from the north, using Apolda or Omaha streets), or the city parking lot south of St. Joseph Street between Fifth and Sixth streets. City lots have free parking on weekends. Curbside parking is also available south of St. Joseph Street and east of Fifth Street.
Street closures will include Main Street between Fifth Street and Mount Rushmore Road, Seventh Street between Apolda and St. Joseph, Sixth Street between the parking ramp entrance (north of Main Street) and St. Joseph St. General public parking within the event closure area will be prohibited after 7 a.m., as the area will be designated for car show participants until 4 p.m.
Sponsors for the event include KOTA Television, McKie Ford Lincoln and Common Cents Stores.
