New Year's Eve Fireworks viewed from Downtown Rapid City

Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013

RAPID CITY, SD – Ring in the New Year with a firework show and more in Downtown Rapid City.

The City of Rapid City Fire Department, the City of Rapid City and Destination Rapid City have joined together to present a firework show at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013. The fireworks will be discharged at Executive Golf Course, and the display can be seen from Downtown Rapid City, including Memorial Park, Main Street Square and a special viewing platform on the third floor of the parking ramp next to Main Street Square.

The 23-minute show, presented by Zambelli Fireworks, is choreographed and synchronized to a music broadcast on The Mix radio station, at 93.9 FM. The music track will feature a wide variety of songs, from oldies and classic rock to classical, featuring Del Shannon, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Yanni, Trans Siberian Orchestra and Andrea Bocelli.

“This is the largest New Year’s Eve show in the whole middle part of the United States,” said Dean Kuhn of Zambelli Fireworks. “Rapid City should be excited and proud to have the largest and finest fireworks display in the state of South Dakota.”

There are over 2,000 individual aerial shells from 2.5 inches to 6 inches in diameter. Approximately half of a mile of digital cable will be used to hook up the 44 firing modules located in 20 different firing positions. About 18,000 feet, or three miles, of ignition wire will be used to light the shells.

“We urge families to spend the day Downtown, dining, shopping, ice skating, then enjoying the fireworks,” said Dan Senftner, CEO and President of Destination Rapid City. “Those who want to stay out later can then enjoy the variety of nightlife Downtown has to offer.”

Visit Main Street Square for Downtown Countdown, sponsored by Family Thrift Center and Prairie Market, with ice skating from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., free horse-drawn carriage rides from 1 to 5 p.m. and family entertainment with JD Productions from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

Many Downtown businesses will hold events to ring in the New Year, including the Hotel Alex Johnson with its annual ball drop.
