Main Street Square assistant director prepares for summer

Marcel Wahlstrom, Main Street Square's assistant director, is creating, building and booking events for summer 2013.

Wahlstrom has worked at Main Street Square for a little over five months. The Rapid City resident started Nov. 12, 2012, in the assistant director position. He primarily plans events and arranges space rentals, while assisting Executive Director Megan Karbowski with general operations.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, Wahlstrom considers the Black Hills to be home after he and his family moved to the area in 1989. He most recently served as project manager for Lester Hospitality, and oversaw a floor-to-ceiling remodel of one of the largest hotels in South Dakota, located in downtown Sioux Falls.

The assistant director is a 1996 Stevens High School graduate, and attended the University of South Dakota and Black Hills State University before opening a business in Spearfish. Wahlstrom has worked in various food and beverage capacities throughout his career, primarily in management roles, and has experience in sales, human resources, hospitality management and retail management.

"Marcel has taken a thorough look at all events for 2013, and has worked with staff and community leaders to build on each one, making them bigger and better," Karbowski said. "He has also been instrumental in representing our organization on the Mt. Rushmore Road District Subcommittee."

Wahlstrom has helped plan and execute several events, including Winter Markets, Downtown Countown, Love is in the Squ-air, Last Day to Skate Party, Eggstravaganza and Earth Day Celebration. He said his past endeavors have all been helpful in one way or another as he transitioned into the role.

"I'm excited to be part of an organization that can help increase the quality of life for every Rapid City and Black Hills resident," Wahlstrom said. "By bringing together various scopes of art, entertainment, music and community organizations in a central gathering space, we have helped create a downtown atmosphere that few cities can replicate."

The assistant director is an active outdoorsman who enjoys cooking, sports and spending time with friends and family, including fiancé, Sherry Beck, general manager at Holiday Inn – Rushmore Plaza.
